三椏（みつまた）とはジンチョウゲ科の植物で、和紙の主要原料の一つです。世界一と言われる日本のお札の主原料でもあり、光沢があって滑らかで緻密な繊維が特徴です。1900年のパリの万博で金杯賞を受賞したのは三椏の光沢紙と呼ばれるものでした。印刷適性が良く、強靱で、西洋の人びとは和紙を目にして驚いたことでしょう。西洋では紙漉きの技術が中国から伝わるまでの長い間、パーチメント（羊皮紙）と呼ばれる革に文字を書いていました。植物から出来たパーチメント？と、思われたのかもしれません。 |
