耳（みみ）とは…紙の周りに出来るボワボワっとした縁のことを言います。紙を漉く時には、原料をすくい上げる枠（漉きげた）ですきますが、紙を漉いて、原料を紙床に伏せて、圧搾して、乾燥…とう行程を踏むなかで、徐々に独特の風合いを持つ耳が付きます。周りに耳が付いているということは紙を一枚ごとに手作りで漉いたという証でもあるわけです。特に外国人はこの耳付の和紙を好みます。ただ、日本では耳付きの紙は上級品ではありません。お殿さまや宮内庁が使う紙は必ず、耳を切り上げて、きちんと規格寸法に仕上げる紙こそが一級品なのです。しかし、近年耳付を目にする機会が減ったため、耳付の方が貴重品の様な勘違いが？起きています。 |
