目（め）とは…紙を漉く時には漉き桁（けた）を前後に揺すって、和紙の原料を積層させて行きます。越前奉書は特に紙を前後に揺らすのみで、横に動かすことは長年の経験上行いません。したがって繊維は紙の天地方向に並びやすく、仕上がった紙は天地の引っぱりに大変強く、反面左右の引っぱりに弱い（逆に言えば左右に折ったり巻いたりしやすい）仕上がりになります。この、縦横の繊維の方向性を「紙の目（め）」と呼びます。カタログを作ったり本を作ったりするときにもこの目に注意して作製しないと、読みにくい本になってしまったりするのです。 |
